What Is Moldavite?
Moldavite is a kind of tektite, usually green in colour, sometimes with blue tones. A large majority of Moldavite comes from the Czech Republic or Germany, bursting into existence approximately 15 million years ago. Real Moldavite is very rare and expensive, so you won’t find it in the collection of a casual crystal lover.
What’s The Difference Between A Tektite And A Crystal?
A tektite is a type of natural glass made from the impact of a meteorite. They are usually very small, with a textured surface, and can be black, brown, green or grey. Tektites were formed a very long time ago.
Tektites begin life as little pieces of earth which are melted by the heat of a meteorite crashing down. The force of the impact launches these rocks into the atmosphere where they rapidly cool, before gravity pulls them back down to the earth. They undertake quite a journey!
However, even though tektites are technically glass, they are considered to be a gemstone by many. Other types of glass are also considered crystals, like Obsidian, which is volcanic glass. Crystals are different to tektites because they form within the earth and have crystalline structures.
